Improv Everywhere

***** the yellow parts are the ones I have corrected

Topic: My knowledge on and interest in Improv Everywhere (flash mob) and how "my" own flash mob is.

Main idea: Being interested in flash mobs, I learn about Improv Everywhere and other cool information about flash mob. In the end, I decide to organize a flash mob myself.

Introduction - I will ask someone acts out freeze flash mob for about ten seconds for me.
              - Then I will define what a flash mob (Improv Everywhere) is simply.

Topic sentence for paragraph 1: I am interested in this topic because it is fun.

- When I was in the first grade of junior high, I saw a TV program called “American flash mob” on Star World Channel. Besides, I have seen a lot of flash mob videos on the Internet.
- The turning point for me to decide my presentation’s topic is after seeing Taipei 101 flash mob video. I was shocked by the video. I don’t know such a mob can impress so many people. Though it is just a kind of activity, I think there are many interesting things behind the scene. Flash mob isn’t popular in Asia, so it may lead me to a new world by doing this project.
- I am not an out-going person so I would like to try something new or learn to release myself by this topic to overcome this disadvantage.

Topic sentence for paragraph 2: Improv Everywhere is different from flash mobs. And why people will participate in their missions.

(1) The differences between Improv Everywhere are

    a. Improv Everywhere was created about 2 years before the first “flash mob.” Our projects are rarely over in a flash. Many last for hours.
    b. While some of our missions may have certain similarities to a flash mob (large numbers of people engaging in a coordinated activity in a public place), we have never embraced that term. Also, some missions use just a few folks while others might use thousands, depending on what suits the idea.
    c. Improv Everywhere will repeat the same theme again and again. They did these for fun. But most of the flash mobs will have a certain purpose.

(2) The reasons why they take part in it are

a. They think it is fun and new. They would like to try once to see what’s going on. Or maybe they want to see a lot of people doing the same action at the same time with their own eyes.
b. If we look at it in the way of psychology, I find out that maybe they are just under too much pressure so that they want to relax by doing something special.

(3) I will give both flash mobs and Improv Everywhere missions examples

    a. Improv Everywhere- Black tie Beach
                            - Mall Santa Classical
                             - Gotta share! The musical
    b. International Zouk flash mob- 2013

Topic sentence for paragraph 3: I have learned so many things during the whole process.

Personal feelings:
(1) Even a small gesture can make people happy. Not to mention, we can make our life different by doing something special together.
(2) Don’t take everything seriously. It’s not necessary for you to find out significant meanings in everything. We can just do it for fun.

Problems:
(3) Though the action doesn’t break the law, it may catches polices’ eyes. In my opinion, if the action doesn’t break the law, there’s no right or wrong. It’s just because we view things from different perspectives.
(4) Reading so much information and knowing so many flash mob organizations, I think it’s quite scary if they gather to do something bad one day. They may be a social problem.

Conclusion: Learning so many things about flash mob, I would like to hold my own flash mob.

a. If my flash mob works, I will show the pictures and video. Besides, I will talk about my feeling during the whole process.
b. If my flash mob doesn’t work, I will talk about my plans about holding a flash mob or the contact between Zouk and me.

*Here are the details about my flash mob.

1. When: I will hold it at either after our competition or winter vacation.
2. Where: 信義區 (新光三越之間的廣場)
This place is big enough and it’s convenient for me to record video.
3. What: Freeze flash mob- 9 minutes- 3 minutes- freeze
                                        - 3 minutes- unfreeze
                                        -3 minutes- freeze
4.   How: I will use facebook to spread the news.

Advice

I think teacher Hazel talked to me from the point of view of a person who didn't know much about “flash mob”. After talking to her, I think the audience would like to know more about

(1) Why they want to hold a flash mob

(2) What time did the flash mob start

(3) Where did the first flash mob held at

(4) Who created flash mob

(5) Which one is the biggest flash mob

(6) People’s reaction when they see a flash mob

She told me that no matter what kind of information I decide to put into my presentation, it will be interesting. Because my topic isn't so academic that other people can’t understand.

Teacher Hazel suggested me to hold a very small mob before my presentation which can be my prelude. She also asked me to think about how I can make my presentation more interesting.

Outline 2

Introduction

Why I am interested in flash mobs:

Having struggle with not knowing which topic to work on, I saw a flash mob video on the Inter Net and it was hold at Taipei 101. In addition, I have joined a flash mob once and I was quite interested in this topic so I chose it at last.

Main idea

1. What is a flash mob?
A flash mob (or flashmob) is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression.
Flash mob= “Flash” crowd+ smart “Mob”

2. What are the differences between flash mobs and Improv Everywhere?

No. Improv Everywhere was created about 2 years before the first “flash mob.” While some of our missions may have certain similarities to a flash mob (large numbers of people engaging in a coordinated activity in a public place), we have never embraced that term. Some missions use just a few folks while others might use thousands, depending on what suits the idea. Also, our projects are rarely over in a flash. Many last for hours.
Over the years the term “flash mob” has been beaten to death by the media and co-opted by marketers. It’s become a lazy, catch-all term to describe things as varied as people dancing at a Black Eyed Peas concert to surprise Oprah Winfrey to teens meeting up to commit crimes in Chicago. I’m not sure what it even means anymore, and I don’t really care to use it to describe what we do.
3. Why do people do it?

       Psychology parts

4. Why am I interested in it?

(1) After searching so many websites about flash mob, I really enjoy myself in them.  There are so many incredible ideas and information. Flash mob isn’t popular in Taiwan maybe is because of our culture. We are more cautious than the western countries. And that’s why some flash mob’s action won’t be accepted by us. I think reading and watching so many videos about flash mob is very interesting because it makes me notice that there’s a kind of new world out there I don’t know.
(2) Those flash mobs’ creators are so creative that I can’t even imagine. In Taiwan, I have never seen such a special activity. Though the doings may not be perfectly planned, it really looks spectacular in the end. I would like to join these flash mobs when I watch every single video about them.
(3) Sometimes I will think about that if I can join one of the flash mobs, what will it be like?

5. Talk about my own experiences

      (1) Joining the flash mob

I joined a flash mob at 西門町 when I was in the first grade of senior high school.

      (2) Contacting with some flash mobs

During these few months, I had sent e-mails to some flash mob organizations or left some messages on facebook.

      (3) Knowing so many interesting websites

I haven’t decide which example I am going to tell.

6. How to create a flash mob by yourself

   (1) Include my own expecting feedback

I hope people who participated in my flash mob will be happy that they had joined it. I don’t want them to be disappointed about this activity or think it is a waste of time to join this activity. I hope they can have different feelings when they are doing these actions. They can consider themselves a special person in the world because every pedestrian is looking at them. They are curious about what are they doing. I hope there will be more people understand what is a flash mob by participating my flash mob.

   (2) Whole plan about holding a flash mob

1 Understand the purpose of a flash mob.
2 Decide what you're going to do for your flash mob occasion
3 Watch previous flash mob events on YouTube.
      4 Organize your flash mob.
5 Provide clear instructions to your group of people.
6 Arrange any props or costumes needed.
7 Know the limitations of your location.
      8 Organize photographers
      9 Let go
10 Finish doing it as if nothing ever happened.

I know the simplest flash mob is to freeze at the same time. Now, I am thinking about to hold a flash mob which freeze at the same time for five minutes then unfreeze for five minutes and freeze again for another five minutes. After that, simply unfreeze and do not acknowledge other people. If onlookers ask you what you are doing, just say “I don’t know what you are talking about.” Then just leave the place.

(4) Videos or pictures taken from my flash mob

If my flash mob doesn’t work, I will put others’ flash mobs’ videos.

Conclusion

1. Things I have learned during the course of preparation

(1) The way to search information
(2) How to interact with people
(3) Organizing my material

2. What am I going to do with flash mob in the future

I found an International flash mob organization called “Zouk”. Zouk is a dancing International flash mob. It will only hold an activity once a year. During the latest date, there were 127 countries in 43 countries participated in this activity on September 21 2013, the international day of peace. They danced at the same time in different places. Though there are so many cities take part in this huge activity, Taiwan isn’t in the list. After noticing it, I sent e-mails to Zouk, asking them if we can join it. Then they replied me that if I have leadership skills, I can be the coordinator of Taiwan. At first, I would like to give it a try, but then they told me that the next activity will only hold on after my presentation. So I can’t go on this plan. Due to this reason, I hope I can really be the coordinator of Taiwan in the future. Actually, dancing is a very challenging work for me, but I would like to take a try. I ‘m not sure yet, maybe it will change my life. In addition, I would like to go abroad to participate more flash mob activities in other countries.
